Yardang, which means 'steep hill' in Uighur, is a landscape formed by a series of parallel ridges and grooves resulting from long-term wind erosion.

In China, there are over 20,000 square kilometers of yardang landforms, located in the northwestern part of the Qaidam Basin in Qinghai, the middle and lower reaches of the Shule River west of Yumen Pass in Gansu, and around the Lop Nur in Xinjiang.

The yardangs we are delving into this time are located west of the Shule River Valley. This area was once a must-pass route on the ancient Silk Road. Today, the marshes have dried up, meadows have disappeared, and the valley has been engulfed by the Gobi Desert. Peaks of hills rise one after another, intricately arranged, mysterious and unpredictable.
